Wipro - 94%?

An article on Wipro by IBD has the following statement.

"The on-time delivery of software and projects by big IT companies such as EDS,
Accenture and IBM is below 30%, Garnick says. That compares with Wipro's 94% on-time delivery."

94%?

My experience at Wipro says otherwise.

Even in the last OM class Prof. Peter Haug was talking about a Research project, Chaos done by Standish Group International, Inc. The findings were that

31% of software projects cancelled before completed
53% of projects cost 189% of their original estimates
16% of software projects completed on time and within budget

Conflicting figures?

Wipro has to be REALLY good to have a 94% track record or is it just a typo?

Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital ;)

Delivery slippages should not be confused with schedule slippages. Yes, schedule slippages are the order of the day. This is due to poor metrics programs. Organisations like Wipro and Infosys are using CMM Level 5 techinques, Statistical process controls and strong tracking mechanisms. They do meet delivery times but internal project schedule slippages are a Project Manager's Nightmare

Take it from a person who has worked in some of the most boasted about projects in Wipro and seen all of "CMM Level 5 techinques, Statistical process controls and strong tracking mechanisms" in action!

94% is atrocious!

CMM is an oxymoron standard, you feel its presence but donot experience it in an organisation. Nowonder they went to CMM-Integrated.

Hey eyes big girl, how many years have u worked with wipro?? 2 yrs? and how many projects have you seen?? and why do you hesitate to actually believ that wipro can actually deliver at 94%??

This is exactly the reason why companies like EDS and CSC are setting up shop in india, to tap talent out of cos like wipy and infy! And moreover, such surveys are conducted by independent parties, which show no favouritism to wipy or infy...
take it easy girl! Our IT industry is certainly the best in the world, at least in terms of quality! :-)

its better to be late than never,
i mean, in responding.
i didnt go thru the hyperlinked article, but i think no fallacy can be pointed out in both statements.

Statement no.1 runs thus:The on-time delivery of software and projects by big IT companies such as EDS,
Accenture and IBM is below 30%, Garnick says. That compares with Wipro's 94% on-time delivery.

and Statement no.2:
31% of software projects cancelled. before completed 53% of projects cost189% of their original estimates.
16% of software projects completed on time and within budget.

and your remark was:
"Conflicting figures?

Wipro has to be REALLY good to have a 94% track record or is it just a typo?".

Now let me put it this way: suppose 100 projects were given to wipro. 94 of it were delivered on time. that constitutes 94%, on-time delivery percentage for wipro, right?

now re-read the statement no.2, 3rd line: 16% of software projects completed on time and within budget.

think, of this 16% of projects taken for the study, 94 projects of wipro were included. in that case, wipro's on-time delivery percentage of 94% can be correct.

there is nothing conflicting or confusing when you read those two statements side by side(per se, i must say, see it rhymes:-)).

whether the 94% thing is true or not, only insiders know!
