Need a mallu saviour

I’ve lost faith in Malayalam movies after watching the recent Dileep flick – Chess. God knows what made the producer fund such a movie. Absolutely nothing new. Except for Dileep’s antics as a budding action hero. The only thing that was slightly entertaining was to hear the Tamilian police officer speak mallu :)
In a nutshell, if someone offers you unlimited popcorn and free passes to the movie, don’t hesistate - run in the other direction.

What is happening to the Mallu film industry? Other than Thanmathra, I can’t remember a single mallu movie that I can admit that I really liked in the past two years.

Are my expectations growing out of hand, or do you feel the same way too?

If I have missed out any good mallu movie released in the last 2 years, let me know. Would love to watch them.

I've heard the same opinion about "Chess" 6th time. Also beware "Aswvaroodan".

Hope you will do the same trick; run in opposite direction, but please double the speed :-)

You want our own Superstar Jishnu to come back ? :-)

Its not just about Mallu movies .. all of 'em share the same traits you've mentioned here ... be it Hindi, Tam, Telugu, Kannada or wateva ... Talk about "Unity in Diversity"

Very correct, btw how about "Vadakumnathan" ? i think that one was made with some sound practical judgment.

Achanurangatha Veedu and Kanne Madanguka - These were watchable movies. Nothing very classy or stuff like that but compared to Lanka, Pachakuthira, Thuruppugulan these moves are much better

Here is a good review of Vadakumnathan. Hopefully this helps.

As for good movies in last two years.

Malayalam, ahem.. let me see.. hmm .. we need new actors for sure.
Would have suggested Rasatantram if Sathyan Anthikad had found a new hero and Mohanlal had played the role played by Bharath Gopi.

If folks like Telugu, then watch Pokiri to find how to sell a star. Plus the movie is well made and doesnt have a 50+ hero trying to woo a 20+ heroine.

Tamil -- Anniyan, Ghajini. Better yet watch Ghajini, Aaru and Mayavi back-to-back to see how good an actor Suya is compared to the new ones in Malayalam.

Ghajini can even be called half Malayalam film since the actresses are both exports from Kerala.

The mimics boys have made acting monkeys play. Where are good old actors of yore. What I would give for a great comedy like Gandhi Nagar 11nd Street

Vadakkumnathan was good.
If you can forgive the hindutva and some antiques.
The songs were soulful especially.

But the worst movie ever made in the history of the human race would be 'Chinthamanu Kolakkese'. Horrible.

seriously,i wonder how cud mal movies can degrade to such a level..chess is the limit, what with dileep teaching classical dance and the works to bhavna. And a corny catchline to boot-"the brilliant game(!!)"...guess we will have to take old mal movie videos and watch them whenever we feel like watching good mal movies..Why cant they make mvies half as good as bharatham, devasuram, kilukkam etc...

i too think vadakkumnathan was quite okay.. you're right in that there is hardly any good mallu movie these days.. the kinds like the mohanlal-srinivasan comedies of the 80s! such simple wholesome fun those were!

nice blog Priya!

Thanks for your suggestions everyone. Looks like I'll have to give Vadakkumnathan a shot. I also have this hidden desire to watch this movie, cuase its name is the same as my favourite place in good ol' Thrissur.

I did watch Rasathantram and did not enjoy the movie. I personally don't prefer movies which try to say too many things at a time. I found Rasathantram very cluttered from that aspect and had a headache by the time the show was over :(

Dinu,
Noooooooooooooooooooooo!

every mallu director competes with each other to question the sensitivity and sensibility of the film goer..so dont hesitate. stop watching malayalam movies...

you liked thanmathra?
see the hindi flick 'black', its much better than this mallu mooovieeeee. and to some remarkable extent you will find the theme somewhat similar.

majority of the masses like movies that makes them cry. and that has become a yardstick to measure its box-office success also.
