Will / Shall?

A foreign tourist was swimming in an English lake. Taken by cramps, he began to sink. He called out for help:
“Attention! Attention! I will drown and no one shall save me!”
Many people were within earshot, but, being well-brought up Englishmen and women, they honoured his wishes and permitted him to drown.

If you didn't get this joke, you need a dose of Daily Writing Tips.

If you did, I am impressed!

I shall keep it in mind and you will continue to post such things

Duh! In the age of netese, rarely do you get to see perfect English! Let alone nuanced differences between 'shall' and 'will'...

Let's face it. English, like any language, is evolving. The rules change with time. So, I shall Had I (or for that matter, you) been there, you'd have got the point and saved the guy, right? ;-)

The fact that the last sentence of the above comment is grammatically incorrect (or rather, incomplete) proves my point! :P

Anon,
Definitely :)

Hari,
...and the point was?

Hari said...

Well... ahem. There were two points:
1) You'd have ignored the mistake and saved the guy

2)English is evolving. Grammar is redundant!

Amen! :D

After reading an old post here, I think twice b4 putting an ‘Apostrophe’ in a sentence, now I have added ‘Will/Shall’ to it..... Great post :)

Reminds me painfully of a lot of people I interact with on a daily basis :(

Hari,
Grammar is redundant? You gotta be kidding me!

Shanks,
Really glad to hear that! :)
Next - comma usage!

Rinch,
So do you correct them or just sigh and get as far away from them as possible?

Rinchen said...

I do a Monica - I punch the first one, then the second one and in the end clunk their heads together :P

ur standard of writing is declining day by day....

Girl With Big Eyes said...

Rinch,

I can visualise you doing that :)
I am sure all of them will be immediate converts!

Anon,
You shall leave and never return! :)

Brave girl for leaving the anonymous option on! I'm easily offended so I dont risk that :D

Plus, your standard of writing is MOST definitely NOT declining this day or any other day!

Rinch,
I used to be easily offended too. But somewhere down the line realised it results in more damage to my mind than anyone else's. So chilling out now. Don't really care!
I write for myself, and not to please anyone else. As long as that is clear to me, anons can say what they want and I'll be continue to be as happy as I always am :)

Ajith,
Yup, the site is a gem for budding writers. It's found its way into my feedreader the day I found it and is easily one of my favourites now.

A typical girl's reaction...
But anyway I wont dare to comment again...

Whoa! Who died and made the above Judge!?! I dont see why I cant be rude myself if others arent being nice either.

Trolls get to me all the time. Yes, even in other people's blogs :)

Now all we need is to see if that last line is really true.
